Merton Road and Granville Road Junction Proposed Changes

Overview

About this consultation

Wandsworth Council is proposing changes to the area around the Merton Road and Granville Road roundabout to make it safer, more accessible and more attractive for people walking, wheeling and cycling.

We would like to hear the views of local residents, businesses and visitors before any decisions are made.

Why are we proposing those changes?

The roundabout has been the subject of safety concerns for a number of years. Collision records show a history of incidents involving pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles in and around the junction.

The Council has secured funding to improve safety and accessibility while maintaining the important movement function of the roundabout.

A range of options have been considered, including replacing the roundabout with traffic signals. However, this option was not taken forward as the provision of signals can often result in delays to motor vehicles because of an all red pedestrian phase.

Instead, the proposal focuses on targeted improvements that aim to make crossing the roads safer and create a better environment for everyone using the area.

What changes are proposed?

1. New and Upgraded Pedestrian Crossings

The proposals include:

  • A new zebra crossing on Granville Road, west of the roundabout.
  • A new zebra crossing on Merton Road, south of the roundabout.
  • Relocation and upgrade of the existing zebra crossing on the northern arm of Merton Road to bring it closer to where people naturally cross and to meet current design standards.

These changes aim to help make crossing the roads easier, safer and more convenient.

2. Options for Brathway Road

To further enhance safety and reduce conflict at the roundabout, changes are proposed at the Brathway Road junction.

Option A: Entry-Only Access (click to expand)

Under this option:

  • Vehicles would be able to enter Brathway Road from the roundabout.
  • Vehicles would not be permitted to exit Brathway Road onto the roundabout.
  • Alternative routes would remain available via Coliston Road, Longstaff Road and Camborne Road.
  • A raised table would be provided to help reduce vehicle speeds at the roundabout to create a better environment for pedestrians

This option would create additional space for pedestrians and provide opportunities for cycle parking and landscaping improvements.

You can view the design here.

Option B: Full Junction Closure (click to expand)

Under this option:

  • The junction between Brathway Road and Merton Road would be permanently closed to motor vehicles.
  • Access to properties would be via Coliston Road, Longstaff Road and Camborne Road.
  • Cycles would be able to access Brathway Road from the roundabout
  • The closed section of road would be transformed into a new public space

The new public space would include:

  • Informal seating.
  • New planting.
  • Rain garden features to help manage surface water.
  • Additional trees.
  • Improved cycle parking.

Example photos can be found here.

You can view the design here.

For both options, traffic assessments indicate that the amount of traffic diverted to alternative routes would be low because of the limited number of properties served by Brathway Road. Both options would require the removal of two pay-and-display parking bays.

Below, you can view the table showing vehicle counts vs. the traffic management policy.

More Information

Brathway Road, Longstaff Road, Coliston Road and Camborne Road are the only vehicular entry points into this local area. Unlike many other areas in the borough, the area does not experience significant levels of through traffic.

To assess the potential impact of the proposed changes to Brathway Road, a traffic survey was undertaken. The survey recorded the following vehicle movements over a 12-hour period:

Road

Turning in

Turning out

Total

Longstaff Road

178

113

291

Coliston Road

158

129

287

Camborne Road

128

181

309

If Brathway Road is made entry-only access at the roundabout, traffic currently using Brathway Road would be redistributed across the remaining roads. In this scenario:

  • Camborne Road would experience the largest increase, with approximately 13 additional vehicles per hour.
  • Coliston Road would experience an increase of approximately 7 additional vehicles per hour.
  • Longstaff Road would experience an increase of approximately 2 additional vehicles per hour.

By comparison, if Brathway Road is subject to a full junction closure at the roundabout, the increases would be greater:

  • Camborne Road would experience approximately 24 additional vehicles per hour.
  • Coliston Road would experience approximately 14 additional vehicles per hour.
  • Longstaff Road would experience approximately 4 additional vehicles per hour.

The survey results indicate that, under either option, the additional traffic would be distributed across the remaining roads, with Camborne Road experiencing the highest increase in vehicle movements.

3. Public Space Proposed Changes

As part of the Councils commitment to improving the public space for all, the scheme would also aim to enhance the quality of the streetscape by:

  • Renewing footways.
  • Widening footways where possible.
  • Removing unnecessary guard railing.
  • Providing opportunities for additional planting and cycle parking.

The aim is to create a more welcoming environment while enhancing accessibility for all users.
