Proposed cycle contraflow scheme Harbut Road (SW11)

Closed 9 Sep 2020

Opened 10 Mar 2020

Overview

The Council would like to inform you of a proposal to implement a cycle contraflow trial on a 60m stretch of Harbut Road. The objective is to improve the flow for cyclists by providing a more direct route for cyclists to join the existing cycle network at the end of Nantes Close.

A plan of the proposed changes can be seen here, and are detailed below:

  • Install new cycle signage and mark the carriageway with cycle symbols, directional arrows, slow and give-way markings to raise drivers' awareness of cyclists.
  • Install a new pair of ‘Motor Vehicles Prohibited’ signs at the closed section of Harbut Road junction with St John’s Hill Grove to reinforce the no through access.
  • Convert existing single yellow lines to double yellow lines at key locations to protect access and visibility.
  • The provision of one additional car parking bay.

The scheme will be implemented on 10th March 2020 on a trial basis using an Experimental Traffic Order until the end of August.  This will allow for a 6 month monitoring period, after which the Council will consider all aspects of the scheme including comments from residents and cycling groups before a decision is made on whether to make the scheme permanent.
