Fitness Equipment Improvements, Palewell Common and Fields

Closed 27 Jun 2016

Opened 3 Jun 2016

Results updated 20 Oct 2017

We would like to thank everyone who responded to the consultation. We have now had time to analyse the results received. The overwhelming majority (91%) of those who responded to the consultation were supportive of the fitness equipment being replaced. Results showed the following options were equally popular:

  • Wooden static equipment
  • A mixture of static, wooden equipment and also metal pieces with moving parts

The Council has discussed options with the Friends of Palewell Common and Fields and agree that it would be most appropriate to install a mix of wooden and metal equipment on site, so that some cardio pieces can be included.

The Council will endeavour to install the most popular pieces chosen by respondents to the consultation, subject to these all fitting into the space allocated for the fitness equipment. These are as follows: pull up bars, a log stack, cross trainer, abs bench, parallel bars, a horizontal ladder, body twist, and a stepper.

We will shortly be going out to tender and anticipate that we will install the new equipment in early winter 2016.

Overview

As part of our commitment to continually improve our parks and open spaces and encourage healthy living, the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames Parks team are working in conjunction with the Friends of Palewell Common and Fields to propose the replacement of the existing fitness equipment (FitPoint) with a selection of individual outdoor fitness equipment or trim trail.

Outdoor fitness equipment can be used by both younger and older people to test their strength and exercise their bodies. It can also help to promote participation in sports, reduce isolation in our communities, and is part of the Council’s wider prevention strategy for health.

The current fitness equipment has been well used by the community over the past ten years. However, due to wear and tear we feel that this equipment needs to be replaced in order to provide modern and fit for purpose equipment. With this in mind, we would like to seek wider community input to gauge interest on preferred options going forward.
