Overview

Installation of new pollinator-friendly planters on Church Court and Golden Court

The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames (LBRuT) is delighted to partner with Be Richmond, the Business Improvement District for Richmond town centre, to fund and install a series of new planters in Church Court and Golden Court.

Working with the Council’s supplier of choice, Meristem, the planters have been carefully designed to complement and enhance the existing streetscape. They will be filled with pollinator-friendly greening to encourage bees and other pollinating insects, and will be maintained throughout the year by local environmental charity, Habitats & Heritage.

Be Richmond represents over 300 businesses in Richmond town centre. At its inception in 2016, member businesses identified additional greening as a key element of plans to enhance the look and feel of the area. Since then, Be Richmond has funded an increased number of hanging baskets and flower towers outside the station during the summer months.

In 2019, an urban realm study commissioned by Be Richmond in partnership with LBRuT, known as the Future Vision for Richmond, also recommended greening projects as part of a longer-term vision to draw attention to Richmond’s iconic streets, lanes and heritage buildings. The locations chosen for these first few planters have, in the past, been subject to graffiti and littering – it is hoped that the planters will go some way to deterring these kinds of anti-social behaviours, whilst at the same time adding colour and vibrancy to Richmond’s historic lanes.
