Terrace Gardens Improvement 2013
Overview
During 2009 a major £1m restoration of the Terrace Gardens, located close to Richmond town centre was undertaken. The works including upgrading of paths and seating areas, reconstruction of steps and stone walls, new furniture and the re-planting of significant areas with a mixture of traditional ornamental, wildlife friendly and sustainable planting.
Whilst the work completed was substantial there were some improvements that couldn’t be included within the funding available. Additional funds have now been secured through section 106 and the Parks Improvement Programme II. It is proposed to use the money to rejuvenate and bring new life to the sloping bed below the Night Watchman's Hut and adjacent to the old toilet block.
In summary the improvements to the sloping bed would include:
- Terracing the slope using retaining walls made from granite kerbs which will be re-used from Whitton High Street and maintain the existing style and materials seen elsewhere in the Gardens.
- Planting the slope with flowering plants that provide an overall feeling of colour, softness and movement.
- Providing a new seating area at the bottom of the slope that looks out over the upper and middle lawns.
- Tree work to better manage and maintain the quality of planting in the slope and improve its appearance and function. This will include some selective tree removal without which the overall scheme cannot go ahead.
We are keen to hear your views on the proposed improvements and invite you to complete and submit the questionnaire by Monday 28th October 2013 when the consultation closes.
Please look at background documents for further detail before completing the questionnaire.
The responses to this consultation will inform the decision about the improvements and if the proposal is supported the work will take place over winter lasting approximately 5-6 weeks.
