Sustainable Communities Act Consultation

Overview

The Government is significantly reducing Richmond’s funding. Government funding for Council services will be reduced by almost 60% by 2028/29, equivalent to an annual reduction of £29 million.

The Government is already implementing these changes to Richmond Council’s funding, with the reductions being phased in over just three years. This is a shorter period than used for previous local government funding changes. For comparison, areas going through local government reorganisation are given eight years to harmonise their Council Tax rates. 

We have fought these cuts and will continue to stand up for residents and oppose them through all available routes.

That is why we are proposing that we submit a proposal under the Sustainable Communities Act, calling on the Government to ensure that future funding arrangements better reflect the needs of Richmond upon Thames and its residents.

The Sustainable Communities Act gives local authorities the power to ask central government to remove laws, policies or other barriers that prevent them from improving the economic, social and environmental wellbeing of their communities. However, local authorities can only submit a proposal if it has consulted residents and residents are supportive.

This questionnaire asks if you support the Council submitting a proposal and asks for your views on the areas we should prioritise in our proposal.
