Overview

We are consulting with park users, local residents and visitors on proposals to improve and upgrade the two existing play areas within North Sheen Recreation Ground

This park was originally part of an orchard belonging to the Popham Estate and was opened in June 1909. Extended in 1923, it now contains football pitches, a running track, two extensive playgrounds, a large dog-free grassed area and a pavilion set amongst trees and shrubs. The main attractions for children in the summer are the paddling pool and playground. Working closely with the Friends of North Sheen we believe there is scope to introduce some additional age appropriate play equipment for toddlers in the Infant Play Area and more challenging and exciting play opportunities in the Junior Play Area for local families to enjoy as destination play area or on their way to and from school.

We do not have detailed design at this stage as we wish to survey existing users on their thoughts and ideas before we progress to a tendering and design stage next year.   In general most of the equipment is in good condition with a good life expectancy.  We therefore believe it is most cost effective to improve it by cleaning and re-painting it rather than replacing it with the possibility of adding a small number of extra pay items or activities, particularly for toddlers.  If you think differently please do let us know.   There will be other improvements to the park as whole including a new park furniture and footpath upgrades next year, all working in close liaison with the Friends of North Sheen.

We are keen to hear the views of both children and adults who do and do not use North Sheen Rec and invite you to take part in this survey.  The information you provide will help us to:

  • understand how the park is used and by whom
  • understand what is important to you
  • ensure it continues to meet local needs

There are a number of ways you can give us your comments:

  1. You can speak to the representatives from Children's Play Advisory Service who are experts helping the Council with play space development and improvement.  Rob Wheway will be in North Sheen Rec on Saturday 22nd November 10am - 11am and will have identification.  Children will have the opportunity to be consulted by interviewing them in the presence of their parents/carers.

  1. By completing and submitting the on-line survey below by 5th December 2014 when the consultation closes.

  1. Paper copies of the questionnaire will be delivered to houses in the area and will also be available at the consultation on the day.  If you would prefer to complete the questionnaire at home you can hand it in at the consultation or post it using the post paid envelopes provided.
