Putney Embankment Trial Pedestrianisation

Closed 14 May 2024

Opened 14 Nov 2023

Overview

As part of the Waterman’s Green improvements, highway works have been underway on The Embankment at the junction with Lower Richmond Road. During this time road closures have been in place to facilitate the works, essentially making the road traffic free. The Council received positive feedback on this arrangement.

It is therefore proposed to install a short pedestrian and cycle zone between the junction with Lower Richmond Road and Thames Place, as there are currently no loading / unloading activities taking place from The Embankment. However, should access be required for loading / unloading, please email TrafficAndEngineering@richmondandwandsworth.gov.uk or parking@richmondandwandsworth.gov.uk to seek prior approval from the Council. Note that occasional vehicular access would still be maintained for the slip way, for example, any maintenance vehicles required for the Thames Tideway Foreshore Structure, river taxi jetty or highway maintenance.

Your comments and experiences during this trial will be valuable in assessing whether to make the trial arrangement permanent. The Council is committed to improving conditions for walking and cycling and this pedestrianisation links with further improvements on Putney High Street and Waterman’s Green. Please click here to see a plan of the proposed pedestrianisation and cycle zone.

Waterman’s Green and The Embankment works are on schedule to be completed by the end of the year. When the road is completed it will ‘reopen’ under the trial pedestrian and cycle zone.
