Proposed 20mph speed limit on Northcote Road (SW11)

Closed 6 Dec 2019

Opened 28 Oct 2019

Overview

Further to the successful boroughwide 20mph implementation on residential roads, the Council is now considering a selection of classified roads that are suitable for a 20mph speed limit.

A 20mph speed limit is being considered on Northcote Road following a petition and the application of additional criteria.

This criteria includes:

  • an existing recorded mean speed at or below 24mph (recorded via traffic surveys)
  • no further additional traffic calming measures would be required
  • there is benefit to the local communities, such as nearby schools or high pedestrian or cycle flows
  • the proposed change is supported by Ward Councillors and residents

The current recorded mean speed on Northcote Road is below 24mph, which is consistent with Department for Transport guidance.

It is also proposed to upgrade short sections of single yellow line to double yellow lines at the junctions of Northcote Road and the adjacent side roads, to prevent obstructive parking, and to ensure good visibility to protect all road users.

Wandsworth Council would like to know your views before deciding whether to proceed with implementing the proposal. You can view a plan here which shows the proposed 20mph speed limit and the extent of double yellows at the junctions with Northcote Road.  20mph signage is required on the main road and existing signage on side roads will be removed, helping to reduce street clutter.  Regular 20mph repeater signs and road markings would be required throughout to remind drivers of the speed limit.

If you wish to submit comments on the proposal, please click on the online survey link below where you will be able provide feedback up to the 6th of December.
