Latchmere Recreation Ground Playground and Landscape Refurbishment 2024
Overview
Wandsworth Council plans to spend £497,163 on upgrading Latchmere Recreation Ground and we want to hear from you.
How you can help
We know you love this playground, and we want to hear why. What makes this place special to you? What do you and your children enjoy doing here, and what would you love to see more of? How can we make it better? We want to know your thoughts and ideas.
This project aims to create a new playground design primarily for children aged 0-12, but we also want to hear from you if you have teenage or adult children with special needs who might enjoy playing here. The new playground will have increased capacity, allowing more children to play together at once. We want to provide diverse, accessible equipment that provides opportunities to develop fine motor skills, helps children judge risk, and encourage active play.

The current play equipment is 15-16 years old and is starting to show signs of wear and tear; if we don’t do something now, we may have to remove some items in the next few years. The new play equipment will be more inclusive, allowing children with physical and learning disabilities to enjoy playing and to play alongside their friends and family. In the new playground, more children can play together at the same time and a greater range of play types can be offered. A playground refurbishment also allows us to improve access gates, as well as replacing the safety surface and allows us to “make space for girls”.
Another aspect of the proposal is adding a new pathway (see below), which will run to the north of the playground, parallel to Reform Street. This will improve access for adults and those walking dogs, allowing them to move through the Recreation Ground, without entering the playground. It will also help us to change the layout of the play equipment making better use of the space. We can then refurbish the planting in this area to provide visual interest and provide space for nature for years ahead.

What happens next
After this first phase of consultation, we will analyse the responses to inform the design specification and help the playground designer select play equipment that best serves residents’ needs. We will then present three design options for you to choose from. The most popular design will be delivered, with the aim to complete the project by summer 2026.
