Wandsworth Bikehangars Consultation 2023
Results updated 17 Sep 2024
Thank you to everyone who took part in the consultation. The installation of the 111 bikehangars taken forward from the consultation is now completed, with the next round of consultation to take place in late 2024.
Overview
Wandsworth Council is seeking views on the introduction of up to 110 additional bikehangars throughout the borough. There are currently 118 bikehangars in Wandsworth, all of which are fully occupied with waiting lists for spaces. The introduction of additional bikehangars will help to alleviate some of the demand for the existing units while also improving geographic coverage.
What is a bikehangar?
A bikehangar is an on-street cycle parking apparatus that securely houses six bicycles and takes up the space of about half of a car parking bay. Bikehangars can only be accessed by registered users. They have a hydraulic opening mechanism that keeps noise to a minimum when the hangars are opened or closed.
Bikehangars are most commonly located within existing on-street car parking bays, but some are also placed on pavements where there is space to accommodate the bikehangar without impacting on pedestrian accessibility.
Bikehangars enable more residents to cycle, more often, by providing a safe and accessible location to store their bicycle. Supporting cycling is key to improving local air quality and forms a key part of Wandsworth’s Environment and Sustainability Strategy.
Why have these locations been chosen?
Locations for bikehangars are driven by resident requests, primarily via the request form on the Wandsworth Council website. The Council has received 4000 requests across 800 streets. The locations represent a mix of the most requested streets and streets in areas where there are no other bikehangars nearby.
Demand for bikehangars is not even across the borough and varies greatly depending on the types of local housing. As a result, bikehangars are not distributed evenly, with more existing and proposed locations in the eastern half of the borough compared to the west.
The Council runs a parallel programme for placing bikehangars on Wandsworth Council housing estates with private consultations run with residents. If you live in Wandsworth Council housing and would like a bikehangar on your estate, please contact your Estate Manager.
How do I access a bikehangar?
Access to each bikehangar is restricted to members. Membership is managed by the bikehangar manufacturers. To date, all of the bikehangars in the borough are CycleHoop managed units, but we will now be introducing a second supplier, Falco.
Please note each bikehangar user is required to pay a refundable deposit and an annual subscription to the supplier, which covers administration, maintenance and any required repairs to the bike hangar.

The proposed bikehangars will predominantly be the same model as pictured and is manufactured by CycleHoop, with some units to be provided by new supplier Falco. More details on the products can be found on their websites.
Proposed locations
Following on from resident requests, we have analysed the responses and locations have been proposed following high levels of local requests. These locations are all ‘on-street’ units to be placed on public highway. Please note locations proposed for Wandsworth Council housing estates are consulted through a separate process.
The following locations have then been short-listed:
We would like to hear your feedback about the proposed locations.
What happens next
All feedback will be carefully considered before any decisions are made about the proposed sites. The Council aims to install the bikehangars in late 2023.
