Proposed 20mph speed limit on classified roads in Wandsworth borough

Overview

Following the successful 20mph implementation on our residential roads, the Council will be implementing a 20mph trial on classified (A and B) roads.

Please note, the restrictions will only apply to roads that are maintained by the Council, although neighbouring boroughs and TfL have also introduced 20mph speed limits on many roads in the area.

Benefits of 20mph limits

Reduced vehicle speeds lead to safer roads and encourage more people to walk and cycle, which supports Wandsworth’s target of being the cleanest and greenest inner London borough. Following the introduction of 20mph speed limits in the borough so far, we have seen an accident rate reduction of 9% overall and a reduction of 19% in vulnerable road user casualties.

The 20mph trial will be implemented via an Experimental Traffic Order (ETO).

What is an Experimental Traffic Order?

ETOs are used to deliver immediate and short-term measures that require monitoring and further review giving the Council the opportunity to trial measures.

The scheme can only be made permanent via a Permanent Traffic Order following a formal decision by the Council’s Strategic Planning and Transportation Overview and Scrutiny Committee.

Whilst there is no requirement for formal consultation in advance of introducing the temporary measures, there is a statutory 6-month period following implementation whereby anyone may comment in writing and all comments must be considered.

An ETO can be amended or withdrawn at any time. The Council will monitor the trial schemes and review the data collected. The Council then has the option to make amendments to the scheme during the trial period to improve its effectiveness.
