Whitton High Street Environment Improvements
Overview
HIGH STREET WHITTON - SAFETY, TRANSPORT & STREET SCENE IMPROVEMENTS
In response to residents' comments from the Council's All in One survey and to make the most of the Uplift Programme, it is proposed to undertake additional work to further improve the look of Whitton High Street and complement the work already undertaken to upgrade street lighting and shop fronts. Please take a look at the consultation drawing to see where the improvements will be carried out.
The environmental improvements planned for Whitton High Street are:
-Replace the pavements on both sides of Whitton High Street between the Admiral Nelson Pub and the junction at Jubilee Avenue and Montrose Avenue, with carefully selected york stone paving to upgrade the existing poor quality surface.
-Replace the surface of private forecourts immediately outside shops and businesses along Whitton High Street with york stone, to complement the newly replaced pavement (subject to agreement).
-Provide kerb build-outs to define the on-street parking bays to rationalise parking and improve traffic flow along the high street.
-Raise the highway at the existing signalled pedestrian crossings (similar to junction with Constance Road) to slow traffic speeds.
-Raised entry treatments at the side road junctions off the High Street to make it easier for pedestrians in a wheelchair or using a push chair to cross.
-Reduce the width of the road at and upgrade existing pedestrian crossings.
Possible gateway features could be placed at each end of the High Street to define the entry to Whitton High Street.
Reduce the amount of street furniture and signs and planting new trees to improve the look of the high street. The trees will be carefully selected to avoid issues of 'leaf drop' and damage to the new paving.
Resurface the carriageway along the High Street. Repaint the walls at the railway bridge.
