School Streets: St James’s trial (SS20)

Closes 5 Oct 2025

Opened 3 Mar 2025

Overview

After an informal consultation, the Council proposes a new School Streets trial at St James’s Primary School.

The proposed hours of operation are Monday to Friday 8.00 to 9.00am and 2.00 to 4.00pm, term time only. You will have an opportunity to comment on the times in the consultation.

The proposed layout of the restrictions are intended to create a safer and more pleasant environment in a zone which is most heavily used on the approach to the school.

This trial will be launched under an Experimental Traffic Order and we welcome your feedback over the first 6 months of the trial. Details of the proposal can be seen below and a FAQ's document can be found here.

The local ward Councillors and the Cabinet Member of the Transport and Air Quality Services Committee support this consultation.

What is a School Street?

A School Street is where a road with a school temporarily closes to reduce vehicular traffic during the school's opening and closing times, to enhance the safety of school children.

There are many benefits of Schools Streets including keeping the area outside the school gates free of congestion, encouraging active travel to school, creating a pleasant and calm atmosphere at the start and end of the school day, reducing idling vehicles and potentially improving air quality, and, of course, improving road safety.

School Streets are in response to requests from schools and residents along with the success of the 17 existing School Streets in the borough.

Further information about other School Street schemes and their drawings can be viewed on the School Street pages of our website. If you have a question about the School Streets scheme generally, you may find the answer in our School Streets FAQs.

The Council is keen to hear the views of local residents, the school community and businesses. What happens next

The consultation closes on 5 October 2025 and the Council will report both the consultation feedback along with monitoring traffic count data of the area to the Transport and Air Quality Committee (TAQ) who will make a decision whether to amend, make the scheme permanent or remove it.
