Seeds of Change: Outdoor Learning in the London Borough of Richmond - Schools Survey

Closed 30 Jun 2015

Opened 19 May 2015

Results updated 9 Nov 2015

Thank you to those who took part in this consultation. Following the period of consultation and analysis of the results, the results report below has been produced.

The report includes recommendations which we are currently progressing by developing webpages that will signpost and promote the work of organisations that currently provide outdoor learning. We are developing a series of self-guided walks for families and schools which can be used in parks and open spaces. These will be included on the council website and promoted in Spring 2016. We are also planning to develop targeted outdoor learning projects to specific groups working with a variety of stakeholders. The first project will be for older people.

We intend to showcase good practice and will develop a network of local groups, including schools, to act as ambassadors and to take on the task of driving outdoor learning in the borough in the longer term.

Overview

The London Borough of Richmond is renowned for having some of the best parks in London. The Council would like to encourage the use of the parks and open spaces in the borough for outdoor learning.

There is good evidence that a visit to green space has a positive impact on physical and mental well-being and research has shown that there are social benefits, educational benefits and personal benefits linked with outdoor learning. The research evidence is strongest for claims relating to both physical and mental health and wellbeing. Other identified personal benefits include those relating to social skills and improvements to quality of life.

In children there is also significant evidence of the links between outdoor learning and educational attainment. For example research with children has focused on improvements in concentration, motor development, and mood improvement.

Seeds of Change is a Council-run project which will develop a strategy for outdoor learning, build on work already being undertaken in the borough’s parks and will focus on a programme of targeted outdoor learning projects.

The Council is undertaking this survey to identify what outdoor learning activity is currently available in Richmond borough, where, and to which groups within the community.

The benefits of the Seeds of Change project may include:

  • improving links between individuals and the environment
  • raising awareness of our local outdoor spaces
  • offering the opportunity to learn in green spaces
  • promoting the outdoor learning that currently takes place in the borough to local residents
  • promoting community cohesion

We would be grateful if you could find the time to answer this survey (even if you do not offer this type of service) in order to ensure that the analysis is as full as possible.

Please submit your completed questionnaire by 30th June  when the consultation closes.
