UPDATE OCTOBER 2016

Following the initial consultation the Council and TfL have continued to develop the Quietways proposals. The latest plans for the Quietway route between Teddington and Ham will be available to view at two public events:

4 November 1pm-6pm Ham Library

8 November 1.30pm-7pm Teddington Baptist Church

The Council's new Cycling Strategy is currently being consulted on and the public events will provide an opportunity to view documents and join the discussion around this too.

 

 

Quietways will be a network of radial and orbital cycle routes throughout London. Linking key destinations, they will tend to follow backstreet routes, go through parks, along waterways or tree-lined streets. The routes will overcome barriers to cycling, targeting cyclists who want to use quieter, low-traffic routes, providing an environment for those cyclists who want to travel at a more gentle pace.

Each Quietway will provide a continuous route for cyclists and every London borough will benefit from the programme. Construction works on the first phase of routes in other London boroughs has already commenced. This network will complement other cycling initiatives such as the Central London Cycling Grid, Cycle Superhighways and Mini-Hollands.

Transport for London (TfL) are working in partnership with London boroughs and managing authorities to deliver the new Quietway routes. Thanks to £800k funding from TfL, Richmond Council has started to develop proposals for a new Quietway route between Teddington and Ham. This will  form part of a longer overall route between Bushy Park and Wandsworth Common which is being developed in collaboration with the London Borough of Wandsworth and The Royal Parks . In turn this route will eventually connect with further Quietway routes across the borough, and a map of this proposed network will be consulted on as part of the Richmond Cycling Strategy in the Autumn.

In many places the Quietway will only require route signs and limited road markings, but some sections will require further measures to improve the safety of cyclists using the routes. Some sections of route will need to be on slightly busier sections of road in order to serve key local centres such as Teddington, but a number of measures are proposed in these locations to help create a safer and more pleasant environment for cyclists and pedestrians.

The new route would link Bushy Park, the town centre of Teddington, Teddington Lock, Ham Common, Richmond Park (Ham Gate to Roehampton Gate) and Wandsworth Common.

Residents and businesses can have their say on the proposals by completing the online questionnaire below or by attending one of the following public events:

  • 6th July from 2-7pm in Ham Library
  • 11th July from 2-7pm in Teddington Baptist Church

 

Please look at the proposed measures below before completing the questionnaire.

Your views are important to us and will help us to shape the proposals from an early stage. Some difficult choices are likely to be required to prioritise how we spend the funding that TfL has allocated to us, and ensure the funding is spent where it is most needed. As more detailed plans are developed there will be further public engagement, likely to take place in Autumn 2016.
