Proposed Road Safety Improvements: Hanworth Road between Waverley Avenue and Hounslow Road

Closes 30 Sep 2024

Opened 30 Aug 2024

Overview

The Council is consulting on a package of road safety measures along Hanworth Road between Waverly Avenue and the River Crane (Hounslow Road). A map of the proposals can be found here.

Improving road safety

Due to speed concerns and the number of collisions along this road, Hanworth Road was identified for the implementation of road safety measures following a review of the boroughwide 20mph speed limit. A package of measures has been developed aimed at improving safety for all road users and key proposals include:

  • Enhanced cycle lanes through removal of central features

  • New parallel zebra crossings for cyclists and pedestrians

  • Junction improvements and safe access to side roads for cyclists

  • Improved access to Crane Park for cyclists via a new shared use section of pavement

  • Introduction of segregated cycle tracks at crossings

As part of these road safety measures, it is proposed to prohibit vehicle access from Hanworth Road into Ellerman Avenue, Lyndhurst Avenue and Waverley Avenue. Cyclists will still be able to make this movement. These locations have been identified as key collision areas due to illegal vehicle turning manoeuvres and as such, the proposed ‘no entry’ points aim to mitigate these issues. It will also be necessary to impose some additional double yellow line waiting restrictions around these junctions to ensure safe cycle access.
