Overview
The Council has received correspondence from residents, bus drivers and the fire service regarding access issues on Broom Road. A study was subsequently undertaken that identified pressure on parking in the area and the fact that parked vehicles narrow the stretch of Broom Road between Broom Water West and Atbara Road. This results in severe traffic congestion preventing larger vehicles, including fire engines and ambulances, from accessing households in the area.
To improve the traffic flow and access for larger vehicles, the Council is proposing to:
- Introduce double yellow lines in Broom Road between Broom Water West and Atbara Road to maintain traffic flow and reduce congestion
- Re-instate double yellow lines in Atbara Road at the junction with Broom Road again to maintain traffic flow and reduce congestion
- Install a significant number of new partial footway parking bays at intervals along Broom Road
-
Change some existing parking bays on the northern half of Broom Road to partial footway parking
The proposed footway parking bays will allow cars to park partially on the footway and partially on the road within the markings. This will allow adequate space for pedestrians whilst widening Broom Road making it easier for vehicles to move freely without blockages and congestion.
The new bays will also address the loss of parking spaces caused by the new yellow lines. Please see the diagram in the related documents below.
