Nelson Road, Whitton - Proposed Road Safety Scheme

Closed 10 Jun 2016

Opened 20 May 2016

Results updated 20 Oct 2017

A number of responses were received and the Cabinet Member for Highways and Streetscene has carefully considered all representation. In light of the positive improvements for users of the road he has agreed to proceed with the scheme as consulted on with two exceptions:

  • The double yellow line within the length of school keep clear will be removed
  • An extension to the length of existing yellow line in Ashdale Close

Details of the decision can be found following the link below:

It is proposed that works will commence on site on the 25 July following the schools finishing for Summer.

Overview

The Council recognises the demand for additional and better pedestrian crossing facilities along Nelson Road, and this scheme aims to address this concern and help to reduce vehicle speeds near the schools. In addition we will use the opportunity to increase the amount of on-street parking and to upgrade the existing bus stops to the current accessibility standard.

The plan, shown at the link below, illustrates the proposals in greater detail, but broadly the proposed changes can be identified as follows (the bullet points are also referenced on the plan):

  • The introduction of a bus stop clearway at the existing westbound bus stop located between Library Way and Willowdene Close
  • The introduction of a raised table and zebra crossing west of the junction with St Vincent Road
  • The removal of existing ‘chicane system’ (which will be replaced with a raised flat top table and kerb build-out)
  • The introduction of “no waiting at any time” restrictions to support the existing “School Keep Clear” carriageway marking at the entrance to Nelson Primary School
  • The removal of existing central refuge island and nearside islands on the east and westbound carriageways (west of the junction with Ashdale Close)
  • Alterations to the on-street parking arrangements which will result in a net increase of 5 more parking spaces. Parking will continue to be uncontrolled

Your views on these proposals will help to shape the eventual outcome of the consultation. You can comment on the scheme either by emailing tony.robinson@richmond.gov.uk or using the online link below.

Following the consultation, the results will be reported to the Cabinet Member for Highways and Streetscene for consideration in conjunction with local Ward Councillors. If the decision is to go ahead with the scheme it is proposed that this will take place during the school summer holiday period 2016.
