Signalised crossing measures at Kew Road junction with Selwyn Avenue
Overview
Richmond Council is seeking your views on proposed changes to the signalised crossing at the junction of Kew Road and Selwyn Avenue.
The proposals are intended to address an issue for cyclists resulting from the wider pavement on the west side of Kew Road, which narrows the cycle lane and can require cyclists travelling northbound to move into the main traffic lane as they pass through the crossing.
The current cycle scheme on Kew Road, which includes partly segregated cycle lanes, was introduced in 2021 and made permanent in 2023. As part of that decision, the Committee recommended that the signalised crossing should be reviewed in the future to see whether more road space could be provided for cyclists. Why we are consulting
The current pavement layout creates a pinch-point where the cycle lane narrows at the crossing, effectively forcing traffic out into the main traffic flow.
The proposed changes aim to:
- Improve safety and comfort for people cycling
- Provide a more consistent width through the crossing
- Improve the appearance and condition of the pavement
- Improve clarity for all road users
- Introduce a traffic-calming effect by using coloured cycle surfacing across the crossing, helping to make drivers more aware of the presence of cyclists
-
Improve connections for cyclists wishing to join or leave Kew Road via Selwyn Avenue and surrounding roads
What is being proposed
The proposal includes:
- Reducing part of the existing pavement build-out to create additional space for cyclists
- Relocating traffic signal poles to match the new kerb alignment
- Installing new footway surfaces
- Introducing coloured cycle surfacing through the crossing to help define the cycle route
- Introducing new cycle access points to allow cyclists the ability to
more easily join or leave Kew Road via the signalised crossing
You can find a map of the proposed changes here.
As the crossing would be slightly wider, the pedestrian green signal may need to operate for a little longer to allow people sufficient time to cross safely. Any increase is expected to be small and is not anticipated to have a significant impact on traffic flow.
