Kew Road proposed Crossing Upgrade

Closed 10 Feb 2014

Opened 20 Jan 2014

Overview

The Council is proposing  to improve pedestrian crossings in Kew Road.

The zebra crossing at the junction of Lion Gate Gardens is very well used giving access to Kew Gardens and the northbound bus stop.   In recent years, however, the Council has received numerous complaints about this crossing with vehicles reported not to stop and there has been three personal injury collisions at this location in the last five years.  Investigations have identified that the problems here are due to both the crossing being very wide and restricted sight-lines for pedestrians and drivers.

To improve the safety of pedestrians and ensure adequate sight lines at this crossing it is proposed to:

  • relocate the crossing slightly further away from the junction
  • replace the zebra crossing with a signalised pedestrian crossing
  • widen the  pavements approaching the crossing on both sides of Kew Road and reduce the crossing width for pedestrians and waiting time for traffic

In addition it is proposed to install a cycle stand in Kew Road opposite Lions Gate Gardens.

Further along Kew Road at the junction with The Avenue it is also proposed to improve the road surfacing and signage at the zebra crossing with no change to the zebra crossing itself.
