Richmond Active Travel Strategy

Overview

Now is a key time to change the way people travel within Richmond borough. In July 2019, Richmond Council declared a climate emergency. As part of this declaration, the Council resolves to be recognised as the greenest London borough and to become carbon neutral by 2030. Changing how people travel will be a pivotal part of achieving this goal – we need more people using clean, sustainable modes, and the Active Travel Strategy has been developed to detail the course the Council will take to realise this vision.

Earlier this year the Council adopted a new ambitious Local Implementation Plan, featuring the headline target for 75% of trips to be by sustainable modes (walking, cycling and public transport) by 2041, from a baseline of 61%. The plan also includes targets for expanding the cycle network, improving air quality, reducing road danger and increasing the use of public transport.

The Active Travel Strategy, which you can view here, has been developed to provide detail on how we will support these targets, focusing on walking and cycling. It will replace the existing Richmond Cycling Strategy to reflect the borough’s new Local Implementation Plan, and also includes actions to support walking.

We are seeking the views of those that travel regularly within the borough on the proposals within the Active Travel Strategy. For the strategy to be successful, the people that live, work and visit Richmond will need to change how they travel, and we want to make sure we are offering the right balance of actions to support this change. Key proposals within the strategy include action specific to supporting walking, and proposals for a high-quality signed cycle network connecting key destinations.
